Minister Clement announces investments to create jobs and strengthen the economy of the Nipissing–Timiskaming region

NORTH BAY, Ontario, March 25, 2011 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced that the Government of Canada, through FedNor, is investing more than $1.5M to support the continued growth and prosperity of the Nipissing–Timiskaming region.

“The Government of Canada, through FedNor, continues to make strategic investments to support small business, create jobs and enable communities throughout the area to capitalize on economic opportunities,” said Minister Clement. “Today’s announcement will help strengthen and diversify the economy, create employment and help stem the flow of youth out-migration throughout the area.”

Of the total, Economic Partners and the South Temiskaming Community Futures Development Corporation – two of 24 Community Futures Development Corporations funded by FedNor in Northern Ontario – will share $300,000 to support a variety of local and regional community economic development projects in their respective service areas. Economic Partners will also receive $320,000 to support its ongoing operations for a one-year period.

Nipissing First Nation will receive $500,000 to establish a small business centre and the City of North Bay will benefit from FedNor funding of $250,000 for an industrial park development initiative. The remaining $193,750 will support a variety of youth intern and community economic development initiatives including:

  • enabling the City of Temiskaming Shores to establish a Northern Pavilion at the International Plowing Match;
  • a strategy to revitalize the downtown waterfront area in the Municipality of Callander;
  • a web-based tourism strategy for Ontario’s Near North; and,
  • the creation of two, 12-month youth internships at the North Bay Multicultural Centre and the West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce respectively.

“Today’s announcements clearly demonstrate that the Government of Canada recognizes the economic needs of the Nipissing–Timiskaming region and is taking action to strengthen our economy,” said Al McDonald, Mayor of North Bay. “I look forward to the positive impact these investments will have on our long-term development efforts and the overall economic well-being of this region.”
