Government of Canada investments support economic development in Greenstone region
GERALDTON, Ontario, March 8, 2012 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment of nearly $582,000 to support small business and community economic development initiatives in the Greenstone region (see attached information sheet).
“The Government of Canada is committed to creating an environment in which businesses can thrive and communities are able to grow,” said Minister Clement. “These investments will provide targeted assistance to strengthen small businesses and help rural Northern Ontario communities prosper.”
The Greenstone Economic Development Corporation will use $408,500 in FedNor funding to provide small and medium-sized enterprises with access to capital and business counselling, as well as support regional community economic development projects and planning activities.
“These funds will enable us to continue working with industry partners to bolster economic growth in the Greenstone region,” said Deanna Thibault, President, Greenstone Economic Development Corporation.
An additional $173,400 will support two initiatives with the Municipality of Greenstone to identify economic opportunities related to the Ring of Fire and undertake a regional economic strategic plan.
“With FedNor support, not only will we identify mining-related opportunities, but we’ll also determine what steps we need to take to ensure our region benefits from increased Ring of Fire activity,” stated Ron Beaulieu, Mayor of Greenstone.
The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Community Futures and Northern Ontario Development Programs, which strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
