Government of Canada investment to support tourism in the Manitoulin region

TOWNSHIP OF ASSIGINACK, Ontario, March 15, 2012 – The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $25,000 to enhance tourism in the Manitoulin region.

“This Government of Canada investment will create economic opportunities for communities in the Manitoulin region,” said Minister Clement. “Today’s announcement will help enhance tourism facilities in the Township of Assiginack and position the region as a premier sport tourism destination for local, national and international sporting events.”

The FedNor funding will assist the Township of Assiginack to promote the annual Manitoulin Pro Challenge snowmobile races and complete capital improvements to the Manitowaning Raceway. Specifically, capital improvements to the raceway will include track and safety enhancements, construction of an additional grandstand and improved lighting.

“FedNor continues to play an important role in our ongoing efforts to increase tourism activity in the Township of Assiginack and the entire Manitoulin region,” said Clyde Rohn, Reeve of the Township of Assiginack. “I look forward to the positive and lasting economic impact this funding will deliver for the people and businesses of Manitoulin Island.”

Funding for this project was provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports initiatives that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
