Government of Canada investment to support economic development in the Superior East region
WAWA, Ontario, March 28, 2012 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $189,000 to support community-based economic development initiatives in the Superior East region.
“This investment underlines the Government of Canada’s commitment to work with local stakeholders to support the economic prosperity of the Superior East region,” said Minister Clement. “For 23 years, our partnership with the Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation has helped entrepreneurs create jobs and communities grow the local economy.”
The FedNor investment will enable the Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) to fund a variety of community-based economic development projects in its service area. Based in Wawa, the Superior East CFDC is one of 24 such organizations funded by FedNor to serve Northern Ontario businesses and communities. CFDCs are not-for-profit organizations, each run by a board of local volunteers and staffed by experienced business and economic development professionals.
“The funding announced today provides us with the stability and resources required to meet the growing needs of our clients,” said Luc Lévesque, Chairperson, Superior East CFDC. “We look forward to continuing our leadership role in regional economic development and are grateful for FedNor’s ongoing support for our organization and the work we do.”
Funding for this project was provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which support initiatives that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
