Harper Government invests to create jobs and strengthen the economy of the Kapuskasing and Timmins region

KAPUSKASING, Ontario, February 4, 2013 – The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister for FedNor, today announced that the Harper Government is investing to support community economic development and growth in the Kapuskasing and Timmins region.

“Northern Ontario is a vast and diverse region, rich in potential and our Government is committed to helping communities capitalize on opportunities to diversify their economy and create jobs,” said Minister Clement. “This investment will assist in maximizing the use of available farm land in the region, as well as help local agri-businesses become more competitive.”

FedNor funding of $43,388 will enable the North Claybelt Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) to hire a consultant to develop an investment attraction strategy for the region’s unused agricultural land, and design an investor package and marketing tools to promote land for sale. The consultant will also assess and help address the marketing, distribution and training needs of agri-producers, and provide recommendations to help increase sales and expand markets.

“With more than one million acres of unused or under-utilized farm land in the area, we have the potential to significantly impact our regional economy by capitalizing on local resources and growing our agricultural sector to help diversify our regional economy,” said Gilbert Peters, Chair, North Claybelt CFDC.

The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
