Financing for innovation, research and development

Financing for innovation, research and development

Businesses can apply for financing under FedNor’s Innovation priority if they have a project idea that involves applied research and development (R&D) and that may be useful to the commercial market.

A suitable project idea could increase innovation, production, and product quality and in key sectors. These sectors include the mining and forest industries, agri-food, green energy and manufacturing.

Examples:

  • engineering design, prototype development, product testing, patent registration
  • early stage marketing, outreach and promotional initiatives, product, process and service certifications
  • market research and technical studies that help direct future R&D and other related R&D studies

Targeted Manufacturing Initiative for Northern Ontario

Through FedNor's Targeted Manufacturing Initiative for Northern Ontario (TMINO), companies seeking improvement can apply for financing. The goal of this initiative is to help Northern Ontario manufacturers boost their productivity to increase sales, exports and job creation. By helping manufacturers increase their performance, FedNor is also helping Northern Ontario become more competitive in the global economy.

There are two main components to the TMINO: Operational Assessments and Productivity Improvements.

Operational Assessments
As part of the Operational Assessment component of TMINO, manufacturers can learn what they need to do to improve their operations. This can help them grow and produce more, in less time. FedNor has partnered with Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) to offer this service, as well as other support services, webinars and workshops, to Northern Ontario manufacturers.

To learn more, visit the CME website.

Productivity Improvements
Through the Productivity Improvements component of TMINO, Northern Ontario companies can apply for financing to update their operations. This can be done by upgrading and improving the equipment used.

Advanced Manufacturing Initiative

For larger-scale projects, Ontario manufacturers can apply for support through the Advanced Manufacturing Fund (AMF). AMF supports projects that aim to:

  • increase productivity;
  • advance development or adoption of cutting-edge technologies;
  • establish clusters or supply chains; and
  • encourage collaboration between the private sector, research institutions and post-secondary institutions.

In Ontario, AMF is run by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
