Through its Business Growth and Competitiveness priority, FedNor supports a variety of projects that help communities and businesses:

This priority also encourages collaboration in key sectors such as mining and forestry, tourism or green energy.

Please note: While businesses benefit from the projects supported under the Business Growth and Competitiveness priority, direct funding is provided to not-for-profit organizations, municipalities and First Nations who are taking the first steps towards business growth in their regions. Businesses may apply for financial support for youth internships.

Enhance productivity

Enhance productivity

To enhance business productivity and competitiveness in Northern Ontario, FedNor supports projects that improve management and business practices, and that provide access to business programs and services. Supported projects could include those that:

  • provide business training;
  • promote the use of technology;
  • result in the implementation of new processes; and
  • other similar initiatives.

Funding is also available for youth internships.

Increase trade and export

Increase trade and export

To promote export and trade in Northern Ontario, FedNor funds projects led by not-for-profit organizations aiming to increase the region's competitiveness around the world. Four types of activities are eligible for support:

  • trade advisory services;
  • the development of trade associations;
  • market entry/expansion; and
  • export-readiness/export strategies.

The goal is simple: create jobs, expand businesses and grow Northern Ontario's economy by increasing the region's trade and export reach across Canada and around the world.

Attract investment

Attract investment

FedNor helps Northern Ontario communities and businesses develop the tools they need to maintain and attract investment into the region, creating new businesses and expanding others. Eligible projects may include.

  • planning to expand or diversify industry sectors;
  • initiatives to attract infrastructure investment;
  • industry research/analysis; and
  • marketing and training efforts.

Promote business development

The diversification of industries, the promotion of new sectors, and the production of valuable and knowledge-based products and services are key to the growth and success of Northern Ontario businesses. To encourage these objectives, FedNor funds projects that support collaboration and partnerships such as business incubators and networks, as well as projects that address common barriers to business growth.

Funding is also available for youth internships.
